IM4200 Cellular Connection
The new IM4200-X model console servers offer cellular modem connectivity:
- The IM4200-X-G model has a internally integrated quad band 3G GSM modem (+ external antenna) which will work with major 3G GSM carriers globally - outside USA
- The IM4200-X-G-USA model comes with an externally mounted quad band 3G GSM modem (+ external antenna) which will work with AT&T and other major GSM carriers in USA
- The IM4200-X-GV-USA model has an externally mounted 3G CDMA modem (+ external antenna) which will work with Verizon in USA
- The IM4200-X-GS-USA model has an externally mounted 3G CDMA modem (+ external antenna) which will work with Sprint in USA
- Alternately with any IM4200-X model (with firmware revision 3.3.2 and later) you can connect your own external USB GSM/HSPA or CDMA/EV-DO cellular modem. Refer faq 396-External-USB-Cellular-Modems
Installing and configuring the IM4200-X-G
The IM4200-X-G console server is supplied with:
- an internal 3G-GSM HSUPA/UMTS cellular modem with dual SMA antenna connectors (which can be used for either receive diversity or GPS)
- an internal 16GB flash memory
- an additional USB2.0 port at the rear
- a USB adapter cable, and
- an external antenna with 10 foot low loss coaxial interconnecting cable and magnetic base
The IMX42xx-G Quick Start Addendum.pdf Quick Start Guide walks you through installing and configuring the cellular capabilities in these console servers.
Note: If cellular signal strength is an issue, an additional diversity antenna is available (as are GPS antennas). Also higher gain and directional antennas can be sourced. Refer faq 385-3G-Antenna.
Installing and configuring the IM4200-X-G(S,V)-USA
The IM4200-X-G(S,V)-USA console server is supplied with:
- an internal 16GB flash memory
- two additional USB2.0 ports at the rear
- a USB extension cable
- an external antenna with 10 foot low loss coaxial interconnecting cable and magnetic base, and
- an externally connected USB GSM or CDMA cellular modem
The USB cable connects the modem to one of the USB 2.0 ports (connect while the IM4200-X is powered off). The antenna cable attaches to the TS9 connector on the modem. It is advisable that the USB modem be Velcro-fastened to the IM-X case at the rear or to a vertical upright in the rack. Make sure the Velcro is large enough and is well adhered to both surfaces. Once the IM4200-X is powered up, the USB cellular modem will be automatically recognized and can be configured as detailed in the IMX42xx-G Quick Start Addendum.pdf Quick Start Guide.
Note: If cellular signal strength is an issue, higher gain and directional third party antennas can be sourced. Refer faq 385-3G-Antenna. However these antennas and cables may use larger SMA connectors rather than TS9 which is the tiny connector on the modem, and you may need to purchase a TS9 to SMA pigtail adapter e.g. www.wifi-link.com/product.php?action=product&class1_id=11&class2_id=766&class3_id=767&product_id=2143.
For more details on maximizing cellular signal strength for your installation refer FAQ385.
