Dial-in out-of-band access
If there’s difficulty in accessing the console server through the main network path, all console server models provide out-of-band (OoB) access. So the Administrator can still access it and its Managed Devices from a remote location using a modem.
- All Opengear console server models support serially attaching an external dial-up modem (and when configured will show as the Serial DB9 Port tab on the System -> Dial menu)
- The IM42xx, IMG4216-25* and ACM5003M come with an internal modem which can provide OoB dial-in access (*actually the IMG4216-25 has an internal modem as an option). These models will display a Internal Modem Port tab under System -> Dial. Like all console servers they can also have an external modem serially attached to their RJ/DB9 modem port
- The ACM500x and IMG4004-5 supports external USB modems (US Robotics 56K USB Modem PN: USR5637). These modems will be auto-detected and an External USB Modem Port tab will come up under System -> Dial (in addition to the Serial DB9 Port tab)
- The IMG4004-5 also supports the Zoom Modem PC Card V.92 (Model 3075 Series 1005)
To activate the Administrator must enable OoB dial-in access on the console server. Once set-up for dial-in PPP access, the console server will await an incoming dial-in connection from a remote site:
- Select System: Dial and select the port to be configured
- Set the Baud Rate and Flow Control that will be used on the modem link. In all cases it is recommended that this be changed to 38,4000 baud with Hardware Flow Control. However for the Serial DB9 Port set these settings obviously must match that of the attached modem
- Check Enable Dial-In Access and configure the Dial-In Settings (Username, Password, Remote and Local PPP IP Address field, Authentication)
- Click Apply
- If you wish additional dial-back security, check Enable Dial-Back and enter the phone number to be called to re-establish an OoB link once a dial-in connection has been logged
Then set up the remote client dial-up software so it can establish a network connection from the Administrator's client modem to the dial-in modem on the console server.
If you are using the SDTConnector client it can be set up to OoB connect to the remote console server at the click of a button (refer faq276).
