Who can configure the console server? Opengear console servers are generally configured using the embedded web server and web based Management Console. Any user with administrator privileges can access and control the console server using this Management Console. Such Administrators can configure all services and ports to control the serial and network connected devices; and configure and monitor logging and alerts. The Administrators also can use the Management Console to set up other users. These new users can have "user" or "admin" privileges. If the new user is a User they are given limited authority (detailed below). However if the new users are set up as Administrators they will have full access to all the Managed Devices connected to the console server, and can in turn The "admin" group users have:
The Management Console supports current versions of popular browsers (Internet Explorer 7.0, Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Netscape 7.0 and more). By default only the secure HTTPS access to the Management Console is enabled and it is recommended that only HTTPS access remain enabled if the server is to be administered over the Internet. The console servers all have an embedded Linux operating system and Administratorshave full command line access (all other users have minimal or zero acccess). So experienced Linux and UNIX administrators may prefer to disable the browser access and configure and operate at the command line (refer faq 233). You can disable browser access by selecting System: Services and leaving the HTTP/HTTPS services unchecked (and checking SSH/Telnet). The Administrator is the only user who can use the Management Console to fully configure the console server. However some Users (i.e users who were not set up in the "admin" group) do have some limited access to the Management Console. Users who were set up in the "users" group have limited menu access to control the Managed Device they have been given access privileges to. They can review the logs, access them using the in-built java terminal and even control their power supply. Other Users (who were set up in some other new group or who are groupless have no access to the Management Console. However all Users can also access these Managed Devices directly through the console server using secure tunneling (refer faq 258).
