Standard Opengear console server serial ports

The Opengear connectors and adapters tabulated below are specified to work with standard UTP Cat 5 cable. You'll find more cable adapter information here as to which adapter is needed to connect to various types of equipment. Also the numbers marked with an * below are the part numbers of the Avocent/Equinox functional equivalents. Console servers with Opengear classic pinouts include: (CM4000, CM4100, SD4000, IM4200, IMG4004-5, IMG4216-25)
The IM4200 and IMG4216-25 have alternative Cisco pinouts listed further down on this page.

Local/Console port connection

To connect to the LOCAL console port on Opengear console servers using a computer or terminal device use the 319001 or 319003 adaptors with standard UTP Cat 5 cable. To connect the LOCAL console ports to modems (for out of band access) use the 319004 adaptor with standard UTP Cat 5 cable. Each Opengear console server is supplied with UTP Cat 5 cables.

  RJ45 serial pinout

RS232 pinout standards exist for both DB9 and DB25 connectors, however there's no pinout standard for RS232 using RJ45 connectors. So custom adaptors and cables are often required to interconnect with the serially managed servers, router, switches or power devices. Suppliers of console servers have also adopted a variety of pinout configurations as can be seen from Zonker's Serial Signals Page on the conserver site.

All Opengear's console servers by default ship with an Opengear Classic pinout (which is the same RJ45 pinout as the Avocent /Equinox brand console server - so if you need to connect to a particular serial device and an Opengear adapter is not available off-the-shelf, you should be able to use an adaptor made to work with one of these competitor's products). The Opengear classic pinout is shown below.

Some Opengear console server models also are available with Cisco or Cyclades RJ pinouts as detailed in Alternate RJ45 Pinouts. These must be specified in the part number at the time of order.
